The Singing Stars

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?…Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”Job 38:4-7 NASB

He was considered “blameless, upright, fearing God” (Job 1:1). Yet, as he went through difficult circumstances, Job revealed the limits of his knowledge.

In His response to Job’s arguments, God demonstrated a much vaster perspective on creation. He wanted Job to know that He was the Creator, that He was sovereign. That He had laid the very “foundation of the earth” and “set its measurements.” He knew its bases and “laid its cornerstone.” He was present “when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy.”

How would Job have responded to phrases like these? Did stars really sing together? In previous generations, this might have been just a metaphor. But, thanks to recent discoveries, we now know that stars actually do “sing.” And so do the planets!

As just one example, highly sensitive instruments developed by NASA have picked up “space sounds” from planets and moons. As a result, NASA scientists concluded, “Little do we realize that the universe is teeming with planetary music.”

These are aspects of creation that Job would not have imagined. In fact, few people in history have ever had an inkling that stars and planets produced sounds. Can we imagine what other wonders of creation have yet to be discovered?

How humbled we should be by these revelations! Like Job, we need to be reminded of God’s greatness. To marvel at His creative power. To be amazed at the love that He has shown us, that such a great God would care about His creation. About each of us. That He would send Jesus to die for us, and make a way for us to live in harmony with Him. A harmony that He has designed into all of creation.

Prayer: Father, I am awed by Your creative power. Thank You for the universe that You have made. I worship and praise You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
