The Plans of Evil Men

Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were sworn enemies. Yet, as world tensions increased, the Soviets felt an urgent need for allies, nations on whom they could depend in the event of war. They even became willing to reach out to the Nazis.

In April 1939, the Soviets sent Britain and France a basis for a treaty. But it took these nations six weeks to reply, and they sent lower level officials. The Soviets felt insulted by this response, and concluded that these nations were not serious about an alliance. Somewhat in desperation, the Soviets began to look toward the Nazis. Finally, the deal was consummated on this day in 1939. And the Nonaggression Pact they signed shocked the world.

The plotting of these men cleared the path for Germany to attack Poland, which began World War II. Eventually, Germany would turn on its Soviet ally, and lose the war. But the price was the loss of millions of people who died and countless suffering.

David knew what it meant to face the plots of men who devise evil things, who continually gather together for war. He turned to God, asking Him, “Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men who have purposed to trip up my feet.” He trusted in God who was his strength: “You have covered my head in the day of battle.”

Right now, there may be people around you who are plotting evil, or who delight in ungodliness. You may feel discouraged and outnumbered. But you can turn to God and depend on Him. If you trust in Him, He will preserve and protect you, and free you from fear. Make God the strength of your life today!
