The Ability to See

“(Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he used to say, ‘Come, and let us go to the seer’; for he who is called a prophet now was formerly called a seer.) . . .‘I am the seer,’ Samuel replied. ‘. . .In the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart.’” 1 Samuel 9:9, 19 NASB

The Bible tells us that, at one time, God’s prophets were called “seers.” The reason is simple: They were given insight from God and the ability to see the future. Because of God’s presence in their lives, they also had discernment and could see things that others could not see.

The Bible makes it clear that these were gifts that were given to these men by God. For He alone knows the future. But, at His discretion, He can reveal the future to His people. In themselves, they had no special gifts or abilities. In every situation, it was God Himself who allowed them to see a glimpse of what will take place in the days to come. In the process, He gave insight into world conditions, other people, and events from daily life.

God still speaks to His people. He already has spoken to us through His Word. There, we find His standards, principles, and promises. And we also find prophetic insights that apply to our own lives and to world conditions.

But God also has given us His Holy Spirit, whom Jesus promised would “teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26).

Today, ask God to give you discernment for the things you face in your family, job, church, and finances. Ask Him to speak to you about your future, your life today, and the problems you face. Ask Him to help you see the world through His eyes.

Prayer: Father, I commit my future to You. Give me insights today that can prepare me for what is coming in my life. Help me to have discernment about my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
