Take Me As I Am

He was a natural talent who never had a singing lesson. Yet Ira Sankey, born on this day in 1840, was blessed with a booming voice that first attracted attention while just a teenager, singing in his church choir. After joining the US army, he often was asked to lead singing for their services.

He had no intention of a career in music. Then, in 1870, he attended the services of evangelist D. L. Moody. The quality of singing at those services was poor, but everything changed when Sankey was asked to lead. This began a partnership with Moody that lasted for thirty years.

Infused with a passion for the Gospel, Sankey realized the power of music. He constantly was sensitive to find music that could “guide the inquiring souls to Jesus Christ.” He brought countless songs to light through his publishing and
composing efforts.

One discovery was a poem inspired by the cries of a young girl in Scotland. He read how she had become “anxious about her spiritual condition.” Her pastor urged her to “read your Bible.” But the girl couldn’t read. She did the only thing she could, crying out, “Lord Jesus, take me as I am!” And her life changed.

Sankey set these words to music, and it became the hymn “Take Me As I Am.” This hymn has touched many lives, like the girl, who felt “helpless” and “full of guilt.” Who have realized that Jesus can set us free. Just “as I am.”

The amazing thing is that Jesus loves us, just as we are. No matter who we are or what we have done, He is ready to forgive us, cleanse us, and give us eternal life. Make sure you have experienced this freedom in your life. And commit yourself to reach others with this amazing love.
