Sacrificing and Giving Thanks

It was a desperate situation, and David feared for his life. He was being pursued like an outlaw, hounded by King Saul and Israel’s combined military forces. Trapped, outnumbered, and overwhelmed, David cried out for God.

In that moment of desperation, he realized that “God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul.” He realized that he could depend upon God. He was faithful, and He defended and delivered David.

David responded in two ways. First, he looked for a way to give God an offering. He wanted to do something to show his trust and his gratitude to Him. But this had to be something that cost something. It had to be a sacrifice or it would not be meaningful.

He did not feel forced to make this sacrifice, but made it “willingly.” He delighted to give to God from the bounty with which he had been blessed.

Second, David responded by being thankful. He realized that God had “delivered me from all trouble.” He no longer was trapped and hiding, but “my eye has looked with satisfaction upon my enemies.” His heart was filled with thanks, and he could not remain silent.

If you find yourself in a desperate situation, remember how David reacted. Cry out to God. Seek His help. Stay faithful to the promises in His Word. Trust in Him. Have faith that He will help you, sustain you, and deliver you.

But also remember the many times in the past when He has helped and delivered you. Show your gratitude by making a sacrifice from your time, talent, and treasure. Demonstrate how thankful and grateful you are.
