Revival

Everything seemed turned upside down in Loughor, a village in southwest Wales. The Holy Spirit had fallen, and everything had changed.

On this day in 1904, a local newspaper described how revival had come to Loughor. Meetings were held “every night attended by dense crowds,” beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting until past 3 a.m. Many who had never attended church before were “making public confession of their conversion.” Everyone spoke about revival.

Each night, Evan Roberts brought a message that was “revealed to him by the Holy Spirit.” The Spirit descended, and “people dropped down from their seats as if they had been struck, and commenced crying for pardon.” A woman cried out “that she had repented of her ways.” Roberts prayed, “Send the Holy Spirit for Jesus Christ’s sake,” creating “a new excitement,” and testimony followed testimony.

Roberts told the reporter that “it was time for us to get out of the groove in which we had walked for so long.” He had been “praying for the Holy Ghost to come upon him. That it had come he was certain.” He “was simply an instrument in the hand of God.”

Today, the world desperately needs another outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We must “get out of the groove” that keeps us from experiencing His blessings. Pray that God’s Spirit would fall on people throughout the world and in your church, family, and community. Don’t be complacent, but cry out to God. Repent of your sins. Ask Him to fill you anew with His Spirit and stir you in a fresh new way.
