Making a Difference

After defeating the mighty city of Jericho, the Israelites did not expect problems when they faced the tiny town of Ai in battle. But instead of an easy victory, they were forced to flee in retreat. It was a shocking loss. When they sought God, He revealed they were defeated because they “acted unfaithfully.” What was the cause? Murder? Idol worship? No. One man stole things God had forbidden.

This man, Achan, had taken a mantle, some silver, and a bar of gold. Then he hid them inside his tent, thinking no one would miss them and that his actions would have no consequences for him or his people. But he was wrong. God knew. He and his family were stoned and then burned to death (vs. 11-22).

This story illustrates the impact one person can have on others – families, churches, businesses, or even nations. Our sins can impact others even when we think we have acted in secret, and no one knows what we have done.

Remember that God knows every secret of your life. You cannot hide from Him. He knows every thought and everything you have done. And everything you do matters. Do not make this a matter of fear but an opportunity for intimacy with Your Father.

Be honest with Him. Ask Him to search your heart. Confess any sins. Make things right before Him and with other people. Remember, your actions matter.
