Lovesick

Solomon described a woman who was so in love that she felt “lovesick.” She had a physical reaction. The only way to have complete health was for her to be with her man. She realized the depth of her love when he had departed from her presence. She “searched for him but I did not find him; I called him but he did not answer me.”

In her desperation, she went to dangerous places, where she was found by watchmen making their rounds. They wounded her, and the guardsmen of the walls took away her shawl. Yet, for her, it was worth the effort.

Not just a picture of romantic love, this also describes the kind of love that God wants us to have for Him. That we are so desperately in love with Him that we crave His presence. Long to read His Word. To talk to Him and fellowship with Him.

But how easy it can be to keep from experiencing this love relationship. Other things and people can occupy our time and attention. But where does God fit in? Is He an afterthought? Are we desperately in love with Him? Do we long to be with Him?

When He was asked, “Which is the great commandment in the Law?” Jesus quoted Deuteronomy, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:36-37). This is the kind of love described in Song of Solomon.

Today, how deeply do you really love God? Don’t let anything block the flow of that love! Remember that He loves you, and longs for fellowship with you. If your love has grown cold, seek to rekindle that relationship. Let that love consume you. Change you.
