The Love of God

“Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” Colossians 3:14 NASB

Peter Marshall never could have anticipated the path his journey would take. Born on this day in 1902 in Coatbridge, Scotland, he was 25 when he decided to immigrate to the US. He made this decision even though he had little money, but he had faith that God would guide and provide for him. In America, he was able to raise enough money to enter seminary, eventually becoming a Presbyterian minister.

Through his preaching and speaking, people were impressed with his eloquence and the sincerity of his faith. As a result, even though he was still young, he was called to pastor the prestigious New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, where many important politicians worshiped. Because of his effectiveness in this position, he was named chaplain of the Senate in 1947.

These were volatile times in the senate, dominated by frequently divisive, partisan debates. But senators of both parties came to respect Marshall. They recognized his intelligence and the zeal of his faith. In particular, he was respected as a man of integrity, who demonstrated a real love for these politicians as people.

Marshall suffered a heart attack and died on January 26, 1949, when he was only 46. But he still continued to influence lives after his death, through the example he had set as well as through a book written by his wife, Catherine, and a subsequent movie about his life.

Today, the world needs people like Peter Marshall who are willing to get involved in their communities and even in politics. Who will stand up for their faith, and show the love of Christ to this generation.

Ask God to move on your heart. Don’t hold back but commit your life to serving Him. And allow His love to flow through you to everyone you meet.

Prayer: Father, may others around me see the love of Jesus through me. May I be Your witness. Use me for Your Kingdom and glory. I dedicate my life and resources to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
