Living on the Edge

“Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.” Exodus 3:1 ESV

Daniel Boone became an American hero, with exploits that inspired books, films, and a popular television program, still seen today.

Born on this day in 1734, he served alongside George Washington during the French and Indian War. In peacetime, he explored far and wide, including regions of modern Florida and Kentucky. Respected because of his character, he was elected to Virginia’s General Assembly and later sheriff of Fayette County, Virginia. He erected a fort on the Kentucky River, which he named Boonesboro, which became an important settlement on the frontier.

Boone later bought land west of the Mississippi River, but lost the title after the land came under French control. But after Louisiana Purchase, the land became American property. And, showing the respect he had won, a special act of Congress gave it back to him.

Daniel also was a strong Believer. A man of faith. He came from a Quaker family and regularly took a Bible with him on hunting expeditions, often reading it to others around the campfire. Daniel and his wife Rebecca had all of their ten children baptized. (We might wonder if he related to Moses, a man who also spent years in a wilderness environment!)

Describing his faith, late in life he wrote, “The religion I have is to love and fear God, believe in Jesus Christ, do all the good to my neighbor and myself that I can, do as little harm as I can help, and trust on God’s mercy for the rest.” This was a practical faith, a faith that he expressed, and which won the respect of others.

Through all of life’s adventures, make sure that you are anchored in your relationship with God. Trusting in Him, seeking to serve Him.

Prayer: Father, help me to be a person of character, a real witness for You. Thank You for Your guidance and protection. Help me to serve You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
