Your Heritage and History

It has become an obsession for some: the investigation of their past. They love filling in the blanks in a family tree. Digging for information about previous generations can reveal surprises, but can also provide perspective. Names in our personal genealogies are real people – each with a personal story, struggles, good and bad decisions, strengths, and weaknesses.

Reading these records, we are reminded of our own journies and histories. As we probe, deeper details emerge. We learn about our ancestors and ourselves. We realize anew how much we owe to our families and our past.

These can be important moments spiritually. We are inspired to think about those who have influenced us and taught us the Bible. We’re reminded of those who have guided us into salvation, faith, and prayer. This kind of reflection is an opportunity to realize how much we owe to the men and women of the Bible and others throughout history who have sacrificed.

The Bible is filled with these kinds of records. During the Christmas season, we are reminded of the two different genealogies of Jesus recorded in the Bible (Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38). Here we see His connection to people with whom we may be familiar as well as some who might be unfamiliar.

Today, think about your past and the people in your spiritual genealogy. Be ready to show gratitude. Be humbled. Help convey these insights to future generations.
