Hardened Hearts

Hardened Hearts

God’s people had entered His presence. The atmosphere was full of thanksgiving and worship. Appreciating His blessings, they declared that He was “the great God, the great King above all gods” (v. 3). Wanting everyone to share His blessings, they cried, “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” (v. 6). They acknowledged that He was their God, and they were “the people of his pasture” (v. 7).

But sadly, there were problems. Despite this glorious worship and these declarations, His people had turned their backs on Him and hardened their hearts. They saw all that He had done yet “tried” and tested Him (vs. 8-9).

They had experienced His miracles and heard His Word, yet their hearts still went astray. They acted as if they had not known His ways. Because of their ultimate rejection, they angered Him as He declared they never would enter His rest (vs. 10-11).

The psalmist gives us this warning to remind us that anyone can fall away. In every stage of life, we always must be careful to listen to God and be on guard against going our own way and taking Him for granted.

Today, don’t be like the Israelites who hardened their hearts and tested God. He loves our worship but still desires our obedience, faithfulness, and hearts. Humble yourself before Him. Listen to Him. Take His Word seriously. Seek to serve Him.
