With Glowing Heart

Francis Scott Key was one of the most important people in American history. The author of the “The Star Spangled Banner,” his stirring words became the U.S. national anthem. The son of an officer who served in the American army during the Revolutionary War, Key grew up in an environment where patriotism was encouraged. As an adult he made his mark as a successful trial lawyer, serving for a time as a U.S. District Attorney.

Key also was a strong Believer. Active in his church, he taught Sunday School and supported missions. He was so passionate about his faith that he considered giving up his law practice to enter the ministry.

A lover of music, he served on the committee preparing a new hymnal. He also wrote hymns. One of his most autobiographical hymns was “With Glowing Heart.” Here, Key made clear that God was the focus of his life. He wrote, “Lord, with glowing heart I’d praise Thee.” He praised Him because of “the pardoning grace that saves me, and the peace that from it flows.”

He recognized that he needed God’s help for his “weak endeavor,” knowing that He had to “light the flame” in his life.

In himself, Key was just a “wretched wanderer.” But God sought and found him. He brought him away from the “paths of death.” He saw how Key was bound in”guilt-born fear” and gave him hope. God had given him new life after drawing him to the cross.

He praised God for His grace that “whispered peace” to him. He was so grateful that he kneeled before Him. This writer of great words found himself speechless when contemplating all God had done. “Since words can never measure, let my life show forth Thy praise.”

Be sure that your life is bringing praise to God.
