The “liberator.” This was the title given to Simon Bolívar, who was born on this day in 1783 in Caracas (in what is now Venezuela).

After his parents died when he was still a boy, Bolívar was sent to Europe to complete his education. There he saw the impact of the revolution that had taken place in France, and the changes Napoleon had made throughout the continent. He began to think about his own land and wanted to bring liberation to South America.

In 1807, Bolívar returned to Venezuela, and in 1808 he launched an independence movement.

Venezuela declared its independence from Spain on July 5, 1811. After a time of war, on August 6, 1813, Bolívar entered Caracas, and became, in effect, the political dictator.

During the following year, he became the primary mover in bringing independence to modern-day Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. His legacy remains secure as the man who brought political freedom to millions.

Today, peoples throughout the world crave the kind of political freedom that Bolívar inspired in Latin America. But the Bible reminds us that this freedom has limits. True freedom only comes when we surrender our lives to Jesus. He said “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” This freedom comes when we continue in His Word and become His “true disciples.” We need a relationship with Him, and must follow and serve Him unconditionally.

Today, are you truly free? Or are you a slave to habits? Possessions? Worries? Fears? Sin? Come to Jesus, right now. Dedicate yourself to His Kingdom. Surrender your time, talent, and treasure to Him. He will give you true freedom.
