As a young girl born to England’s upper class, Lady Selina Shirley grew up surrounded by wealth and opulence. Then, in 1716, when she was just nine, her eyes were opened to the shortness of life. She witnessed a funeral procession for a child who also was nine. After this traumatic event, she started searching for truth and meaning.

As she prayed and read the Bible, she realized that “my best righteousness now appeared to be but filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). She recognized that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But she still felt that something was missing in her life.

After her marriage in 1728, she became known as Lady Huntingdon. One evening she went with two sisters-in-law to hear the powerful evangelist, George Whitefield. One of her sisters-in-law committed her life to Christ, telling Selina, “Everything has changed since I trusted Christ for salvation!”

Moved by this testimony, she read in the Bible how there can be no other foundation “than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” This was the answer she was looking for, and she committed her life to Him that day.

Suddenly, the weight of her burdens disappeared, and she was filled with joy and peace. She dedicated herself to serving God, seeking to present herself to God as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). And she sought to serve and live for Him the rest of her life. She helped change the world by building churches and supporting the spread of the Gospel.

Today, make sure that you are trusting in God, and that Jesus is the foundation of your life. And make sure you are investing your time and resources in the Kingdom that will last: The Kingdom of God!
