Foolish Things

Voltaire was not his real name but the pen name of François-Marie Arouet, one of the most influential writers in history. Born on this day in Paris in 1694, he became a scathing opponent of the church, one of the few willing to engage in open criticism. His attacks opened the door to further erosion in the position of Christianity.

He felt that established religion was “the enemy of mankind.” He believed that “the destruction of Christianity is essential to the interests of civilization.” He predicted that within 100 years the Bible “would pass from common use.”

Voltaire clearly was influential. But was he really so “wise”?

In our time, we look around and consider those with reputations for wisdom. Authors. Scholars. Various experts. But the Bible urges us to realize that God has different standards. That human wisdom, isolated from Him, is foolishness. In fact, God deliberately has chosen things “the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise.”

God offers us something far greater: supernatural insights and wisdom. This process starts as we humble ourselves before Him. When we lay aside our own ideas and cry out to God. When we hunger and thirst for Him.

Many in the world focus on what makes sense to their limited minds and human logic with all its flaws. But in order to receive wisdom from God, we must be willing to believe God unconditionally.

Today, dare to believe. Dare to trust God. Hunger and thirst for His wisdom. Humble yourself before Him. Seek Him. Put His Word into practice in your life.
