First Place

Paul’s ministry in Ephesus began with demonstrations of the power of God at work. The Bible tells us that “God gave Paul the power to do unusual miracles.” As a result, many people believed. Miracles took place. Lives were transformed.

But some were not happy. One was a silversmith named Demetrius. He realized that if people believed Paul’s message, fewer people would worship their god, Artemis. But this was not just a religious matter. Demetrius reminded his fellow craftsmen that “our wealth comes from this business.” For him, Paul’s message was bad for business.

Today, many people, even some Christians, have a similar attitude. Instead of focusing on God and His Kingdom, they allow the things of this world to have priority. How easily this can happen to any of us. We can become wrapped up with our work, consumed by our careers, and obsessed with personal pleasures and interests. Even Christians can become more concerned about these things than about serving and trusting God. This focus can seep into our thinking and motivate us to abandon our commitment to God, His Word, and Truth.

The Bible reminds us that God is to be the focus of our lives. That we are to trust in Him, to realize that He is our source and our provider. Do not be trapped into worrying about the world. He promises that if you seek first His Kingdom, He will provide everything you need (Matthew 6:33).

Give God first place. You can trust in Him to take care of you.
