Feast of Tabernacles

Feast of Tabernacles

After years in exile, God’s people had begun the process of returning to their homeland. One of the first acts of these returning exiles was to celebrate the Feast of Booths (or “Tabernacles”). This revealed just how important they felt this day was to God and to their future.

This was among the feast days instituted by God Himself. It was one of “the Lord’s appointed times” (Leviticus 23:2), a yearly opportunity to remember what He had done for them. During this feast, they were to build temporary dwellings on their house tops and live in them for seven days, followed by a solemn assembly.

They also were to give to God from the Harvest He had given to them. No one was to “appear before the Lord empty-handed” (Deuteronomy 16:16). They were to bring offerings beyond their normal tithes and offerings. As they honored God with their gifts, He promised to bless them in special ways.

This year, this feast begins at sundown today. It presents powerful principles that we still need to remember. God still promises blessings to those who humble themselves before Him, remember all that He has done, and bring Him offerings from His bountiful blessings.

Don’t let this season of Tabernacles pass you by. Stop and think about all that God has done for you! Ask for His help on the issues you face. Renew your commitment to seek Him first. Depend on Him to meet your needs. Don’t appear before Him empty-handed, but make an offering to Him from your time, talent, and treasure. Invest your resources in His Kingdom.
