Fear or Focus

What fills us with fear? Violence? War? The unknown? The fact is that consistently high on this list is a fear of other people, particularly speaking in front of groups. According to a recent study, nearly 30 percent of Americans admit to being afraid to speak in public.

The impact of this fear is devastating. It weakens our confidence and muddies our thinking. As a result, it becomes harder to concentrate. We become nervous and less effective.

One recent study reported that confident speakers are far more passionate than nervous speakers. They speak with more energy, and are seen as believable and sincere.

Why are we so afraid of people? Because of what they can say and do. Because they make us feel insecure. Because they might criticize or ridicule us. They can influence our reputation and careers. They can seem to be the key to success or failure.

In many ways, fears demonstrate the true condition and priorities of our hearts.

But the Bible reminds us of how everything changes when we stop focusing on other people and, instead, focus on God. If we concentrate on pleasing Him, we have no reason to fear others. We can be free!

The Bible says that “fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety” (Proverbs 29:25). If we fear other people, we will find ourselves being trapped. Emotionally. Mentally. Even spiritually. But the key to freedom and success is to trust in the Lord! To focus on Him.

In your life, be sure that you trust God completely. Don’t allow your life to be paralyzed by emotions. As you depend on Him, let Him take away your worries and fears. Focus on serving Him, and being a faithful servant. Completing the assignments He has given you. Only concerned about His approval.
