Faith in God’s Word

Phoebe Worrall was raised in a home where Christianity was a priority. Born in New York City in December 1807, she was only 20 when she married Walter Palmer, a physician who shared her faith. Active in their church, they began hosting meetings in their home, and these continued for many years.

Phoebe experienced a series of crises after three of her first four children died as infants. As she examined her life, she realized that something was missing. In spite of her religious upbringing, she could not point to a definite conversion experience. After a time of struggle, she received a breakthrough when her sister, Sarah, helped her understand what Paul wrote in Romans 6.
She realized how important it was to believe, confess, and act in faith. This gave her great assurance. She experienced great victory as she decided to declare herself “entirely devoted to God” and “dead to sin,” placing her confidence in His Word.

Phoebe realized that others needed this same confidence. At a time when America was being revolutionized by frontier campmeetings, her “Tuesday meetings” demonstrated that God could bring revival in the city, as well as the country. These meetings helped lay the groundwork for the great revivals that broke out in New York in 1858. As others heard about her faith, she often was asked to speak in meetings, taking part in more than 100 campmeetings and revivals in the United States, Canada, and the UK.

Today, the world needs people like Phoebe Worrall—who are dedicated to God’s Word and who live by faith. Make sure that you don’t give in to doubt or worry. Fill your life with the Bible. Declare its promises to be true in your life. Be ready to share your faith, and commit your life to reaching the Lost with the Gospel.
