Fairness and Integrity

Fairness and Integrity

Tensions had escalated in colonial America. In Boston, a lone British sentry stood guard over the Custom House. When a church bell rang, a melee developed, and eight soldiers joined the sentry. Feeling threatened, they opened fire, killing five colonists.

The public mood was so hostile that it seemed impossible that these soldiers could receive a fair trial. When no one else would defend them, the task fell to John Adams, at the time a 34-year-old lawyer. Although an ardent patriot, he believed that every person had “the right to counsel and a fair trial.”

During the trial, he reminded the jury that “wishes” and “passions” cannot alter the facts. Truth mattered. The jury was convinced, acquitting six soldiers and giving the others light sentences.

Adams, who later became America’s second president, called this one of the most important actions of his life. He could make this stand because of his strong Christian faith and Biblical foundation.

The Bible tells us that God is righteous and loves justice. “Those who do what is right willsee his face” (Psalm 11:7 NLT). He looks for people who realize that He “demands fairness” and calls us to live according to His standards  (Proverbs 16:11).

Today, seek to be a person of integrity in everything you do. Develop an unwavering commitment to truth not impacted by opinions or pressure. Remember, you are accountable to God. He sets the standard.
