Everything Comes from God

“The heavens are telling of the glory of God . . .Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their utterances to the end of the world.” – Psalm 19:1-4 NASB

Franz Joseph Haydn had become an international superstar. His fame had been confirmed when he left his native Austria to write and conduct a series of symphonies in London where he was treated like a first-class celebrity.

He achieved this recognition largely as a result of his service to Austria’s Esterházy family. Born on this day in 1732, Haydn first made his mark when he was only eight years old, singing prominently in a Vienna church choir. His big break came after being asked to join the Esterházy staff.

The head of that family, Prince Paul Anton Esterházy I, made music a focal point of their vast estate. Throughout his service to the family, Haydn wrote music of staggering originality and diversity to entertain the family and their guests.

Life on the estate changed in 1790, when Prince Paul Anton II became family patriarch. He diminished the role of music on the estate, leaving Haydn free to pursue other directions, such as the opportunity in London.

But Haydn seemed to have a sense of the right perspective on his success, increasingly focusing on God. Late in his life, Haydn turned to oratorios based on Biblical themes. One was the “Creation,” which included the anthem, “The Heavens are Telling,” based on Psalm 19.

The last concert he attended was a performance of The Creation in Vienna in 1808. After the final “Amen,” the audience rose to applaud. But Haydn raised his hands skyward and said, “Not from me. From there, above, comes everything.”

Haydn reminds us that God created all things. That creation itself tells of His glory. Remember to make Him the focus of your life. Worship Him. Dedicate your life to Him. Remember, everything you have comes from Him.

Prayer: Father, thank You for all that You have done for me. You created all things. I believe that nothing is impossible with You. May my life bring You glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
