Every Step of the Way

On this day in 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on a journey to explore the western regions of the United States. Accompanied by a few dozen men, they were guided largely by maps and stories relayed by trappers and Native Americans. It was a journey no one previously had taken.

Along the way they faced dangers and problems they could not have anticipated. As one leading scholar describes, they were “totally out of touch” and utterly “by themselves,” forced to make decisions “with no input from anybody else.” Yet they persisted, finding ways to overcome obstacles, learning how to make decisions, evaluating their options. And they reached their goal.

In their journeys through life, many Christians feel alone and anxious. But all of us need to remember the example set by Jesus’ disciples, when He sent them on journeys of faith. Like Lewis and Clark, they were to secure their supplies while they were on the way. Jesus also warned them that their journey might be hard, but He knew they could complete their assignments.

In similar ways, Jesus has sent each of us on a mission. On this journey, we may face uncertainty, unknowns, and many needs. But we can call on Him for direction and peace, protection and power.

In your life, do not be discouraged, or feel alone. Be ready to call on Jesus. He is with you every step of the way.
