Credibility and Preparation

Ezra faced a situation that could have seemed impossible. The obstacles were enormous. The resources available to him could have seemed completely inadequate. He faced countless unknowns and dangers. And he was a Jew, living in Persia, where his people had been exiled for years.

Pondering what to do, Ezra showed his understanding of political realities and the importance of working through the proper channels. He sought to be prepared for each step of the process, and to proceed in the right way. Ezra also demonstrated the importance of credibility. He had the right lineage and qualifications. He knew the law, and had received the training necessary to accomplish his assignment.

Ezra recognized the need for proper authorization, and the king’s approval. This wasn’t a guarantee but he proceeded in the right way. As a result, the king “granted him everything he asked.” He even wrote a personal letter, detailing the ways Ezra had the blessings of his kingdom and government.

His concern for details would prove to be essential in accomplishing his goals. Yet the most important factor for his success was God’s blessing, for “the hand of the Lord his God was on him.”

In your life, remember that your primary focus always should be on pleasing God. Having His direction and guidance. Seek to be obedient to His call on your life. Walking in tune with His Spirit. But never forget the importance of practical matters. Thinking through each step. Following the right procedures. Being ready to answer every question. Having the right plans.

Seek to be a good steward of the resources God has given you. Do the practical things necessary for success while placing a priority on pleasing God and seeking His favor.
