Why Was I Born?

by Tina Yeager

If you’ve ever wondered why you were born, you’re not alone. The search for life’s meaning has transcended time and cultures. Asking why you exist stands as one of the most universal questions ever posed. And perhaps the most distinctly human.

Our innate desire to matter sets us apart from the rest of creation. The meaning we crave springs from our original design as children created in our Father’s image. We reflect the nature of God, who has eternal significance.

God sculpted purpose into the human shape with specific traits crafted for each of his children. Picture the human soul as a twisting ladder of spiritual DNA. Your design includes all the common elements shared by children of God. Yet you also bear unique aspects equipping you to impact the world unlike anyone else.

All people share three common purposes.

Human beings long to fulfill the soul’s basic functions. The Lord created us with common design goals inherent in our nature. Though we don’t always recognize how to satisfy these aspirations, a sense of emptiness signals our hunger for something more. Whether or not we understand them, these transcendent yearnings churn within every soul.

  1. Honor the Lord.

Honoring God serves a vital part of all human purpose.

We were designed to join the universe in glorifying our Creator. When we praise and worship the Lord, our spirits acknowledge and align with their common design and its origin. (Ephesians 1:11-12, Colossians 1:15-16, Luke 19:38-40, Romans 1:20)

God shaped us to reflect his holiness. Righteous living lends itself to respecting our Creator and the presence of his indwelling Holy Spirit. (1 Peter 1:15-16, Genesis 1:27, Romans 8:28-30, 2 Corinthians 5:5, 2 Corinthians 7:1, Ephesians 1:4, Colossians 3:10, 1 John 1:5-7)

Listening to our Father’s wisdom guides us to live our best. Respecting the Lord by the way we live blesses us, since God authored all elements of faith and law for our benefit. When we recognize the love and purity of his heart, we can obey with peace instead of resistance. (Galatians 6:8-10, Deuteronomy 30:9-16, Deuteronomy 31:47)

  1. Love the Lord.

We were created for a loving relationship with God. His original blueprint for life showed up in Eden, where human beings walked and spoke with the Lord throughout each day. To connect with our purpose includes spending time with our Father in two-way prayer conversations. We were born to grow our love for God as we talk to him and listen to him. The Lord gave his own life to draw us closer to his heart so we can dwell in his love forever. He sacrificed himself to pour grace upon us, allowing us to experience love and fulfilling life. (John 3:16, Romans 5:5-11, Ephesians 2:4-8, 1 John 3:1, 1 John 4:7-10, John 1:14)

Love for God, which begins with God, stands as the central part of every human being’s reason for being.

  1. Share God’s love with others.

The Creator designed us as relational beings. Genesis 1 refers to the Creator as Elohim, a plural term for God. Father, Son, and Spirit always existed in perfect relationship and therefore created us to exist in fellowship, too. The moment when only one human stood alone on earth remained the sole part of the creation story referred to as “not good.” (Genesis 2:18)

Grace and love must flow. When we truly receive the blessings from God’s heart, we’re compelled to pour them out toward others. We were born to serve as aqueducts of divine love, serving in connection with others. (1 Corinthians 13, Ephesians 3:16-19, 1 Peter 4:8, 1 John 2:9-11)

Loving others fulfills a critical part of our reason for being.

Each person has a unique purpose.

  • God created you with a unique spiritual DNA.

You were born as a one-of-a kind. No one else shares your exact blend of personality traits, individual style, and talents. (Psalm 139)

The Lord designed you for special anointing from his Spirit. When you submit your life to Christ, the Holy Spirit endows you with a specific set of spiritual gifts in addition to the talents with which you were born. (Romans 12:4-8, 1 Corinthians 12:4-27, Ephesians 1:4)

No one else shares your soul’s DNA. You were born with certain traits for special gifting to fulfill a unique purpose. (2 Corinthians 1:21-22, Ephesians 2:10, Philippians 3:14, 1 Timothy 4:14)

  • You were born into a specific physical space.

You exist in a certain time and place for a purpose. Your experiences, from traumatic to triumphant, can serve as the lighthouse through which the Holy Spirit offers a beacon of hope and life to lost and perishing souls nearby. You could provide the one relatable version of God’s love those in your path will encounter. The community around you might only receive what they need if the Spirit shares it through you. (2 Corinthians 3:3-6, 2 Corinthians 4:13-15, 2 Corinthians 5:20, Philippians 2:13, Matthew 5:15-16)

God created you to experience satisfaction through fulfilling your purpose. He also blessed you with missions designed to bring you the greatest joy.

Like all people, you were born to honor our Creator with love for him and others. But God only created one you. He shaped you as a unique vessel to share his blessings. The world needs your soul’s contribution to experience the joy of divine purpose fulfilled.
