The Light & the Darkness: There Is Power in Jesus’ Name
“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness” (John 12:46).
There has been an ongoing battle between good and evil, light versus dark – Jesus against Satan for millennia. The devil and his minions – demons – often find solace in the shadows while operating in the darkness, hidden.
Satan is doing everything within his power to cast doubt, harass, and deceive you into believing that what you’re doing will have no impact on the Kingdom of God, that your efforts are in vain. He’s pursuing the souls of men through false religion, worldly success, and entertainment to wreak havoc wherever possible.
However, there is only one way to defeat the forces of evil and remove Satan and his demons from your life for good.
By receiving Jesus into your life. And if you do, you will walk in the light, and you will have no reason to fear.
This battle of good versus evil and casting out of demons is the focus of the 2019 documentary, The Light & the Darkness, written and directed by and starring James Alford, and featuring Dick Leggatt and Ivory Hopkins of Derek Prince Ministries and Pilgrims Ministry of Deliverance, respectively. The film can be watched on Inspiration TV.
The Forgotten Authority
From the time Jesus began His worldly ministry, He has been in the business of casting out demons. The early Christian churches from the first century carried on the practice of actively engaging in fighting the devil. But over time, that has changed.
Today, many Christians are complacent in their spiritual placement in the world. They’re not taking up the swords of spiritual warfare. Instead, they’re content in being saved and knowing that they’re going to heaven. They’re comfortable with only receiving the message of a Sunday morning worship service, some of which are more about presentation and theatrics than the Word.
But that’s not the way it should be. According to Leggatt, “God has called us to warfare. He has called us to present His word in such a way that we’re gonna snatch people from the fire, and if we’re going to live at that level then we’re going to have to be prepared for the fact that we’re going to encounter warfare.”
The warfare Leggatt is talking about is the battle between light and darkness – and casting out demons and denying Satan any hold on our lives. Churches, however, need to be better equipped to take on the enemy, but many preachers today don’t prophesy or know how to cast out demons.
“Sometimes the church is not teaching as if we have authority,” stated Ivory. “We have authority that we’re not using.”
Leggatt added: “Unfortunately, in our day and age, we’re not operating in that same power as Jesus was. It’s not that we can’t, it’s that we don’t, but if we operate in the power of Jesus, and I say this to everyone watching this. Be encouraged by the fact that if you’re running into warfare, it’s because you’re doing something right, not because you’re doing something wrong.”
The Occult Preoccupation
Unlike in the past, where the devil and his minions often operated in the shadows, today people aren’t afraid to openly practice and discuss the dark arts and dabble in various occult activities. Witchcraft, psychic readings, astrology, numerology, divination, and even satanism have found mainstream acceptance, primarily spurred on by their glamorization in film and TV.
“One of the things we’re seeing in society today is a tremendous preoccupation with the occult. In all its forms, you know,” Leggatt said. “From what would be lightweight, which is reading horoscopes and things like that to actual demonic satanic worship and activity. It’s just a fact that we have to deal with and if you look in the movie industry, you see a tremendous preoccupation with this kind of stuff, with the occult and mysterious, and even in movies that would not be labeled as horror movies, you still see this thread of occult preoccupation. That’s just society.”
With the presence and acceptance of many of these occult and dark practices, there is a real need to shine a light in all corners of society where the devil and his minions lurk. We need to cast out Satan wherever he hides, and the best way to do that is by invoking the name of Jesus Christ. Because there is power in His name.
“When we call on the name of Jesus, His light shines, even in our most darkest moments,” stated Alford. “The Bible calls Him the light of the world and when His light shines into your life, every dark thing must fade away.”
