Standing in Your TRUE Identity

by Ben Cerullo

Identify theft is a big problem today—and I don’t just mean the theft of your credit card information or Social Security number. The Bible reveals that the devil is a thief (John 10:10), and one of his favorite targets is to steal the amazing identity God has given us in Christ.

In fact, I’ve met some Believers whose self-image is as distorted as something from the “House of Mirrors” at the state fair. They don’t see themselves through the Lord’s eyes, but through the lens of their circumstances and surroundings.

Sometimes our identity is stolen through the words or actions of those who are closest to us. Jabez, for example, was labeled by his mother as “a pain” (1 Chronicles 4:9-10). But when he cried out to the Lord, Jabez was set free from that destructive label.

I’m always amazed when I read about Jabez’ turnaround, because he didn’t even have the full set of Scriptures to help him see God’s perspective on his life. In contrast, you and I shouldn’t struggle with this nearly as much as we often do. From cover to cover, the Bible reveals our true identity as beloved sons and daughters of the living God.

Throughout the Bible, the Lord gave people a new name and new identity—and He wants to do the same for you. You might as well embrace what God says about you, but that will mean tearing up any false I.D. you’ve been carrying around.

What the Bible Says About You

As someone who has prayed to surrender to Christ as your Lord and Savior, God’s Word declares many incredible truths about your new identity. No matter what you may have done before being born again in Christ, in Him you are now a “new creation,” and Scripture says, “Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

In order to have an effective prayer life, it’s crucial that you understand who you are in Christ. Only then will you have boldness to claim God’s promises and stand in His authority.

I encourage you to take time to look up and meditate on these amazing verses about your new identity in Christ. By faith, agree with what God’s Word says about you, and claim His promises to you as His dear child.

In Christ, You Are…

  • Crucified to your old, sinful self and raised to a new life – Romans 6:6, Ephesians 2:5, Colossians 3:1

  • Free from the law of sin and death – Romans 8:2
  • Accepted by God – Ephesians 1:6

  • Perfectly provided for, with all your needs supplied – Philippians 4:19
  • Complete – Colossians 2:10

As you meditate on what God says about you in His Word, you will be “transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Satan’s lies and accusations about you will be replaced by your new identity as “the righteousness of God” in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Instead of allowing the opinions of other people to shape your identity and actions, remember this great promise to those who meditate on God’s Word and
receive it as true in their lives:

He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper (Psalm 1:3).

Be bold in claiming Biblical promises like this. As you delight in the promises of God’s Word and walk in His ways, you will prosper and be blessed!

It’s crucial for your thoughts to increasingly be shaped by God’s truth, because your thoughts determine the person you will become. That’s why Solomon pointed out, “As he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

Never forget that the devil is a liar (John 8:44). Not only will he lie about God, but he also will lie about YOU. However, your life will be transformed as you get to know and stand upon the truth of your new identity as a child of God. You’ll experience a whole new level of victory because you’re able to discern and defeat Satan’s lies.
