A New Mindset for the New Year

What are you asking God to do in your life in the coming year? I’m sure there are many possible answers to this question. But let me suggest that one of the most important things you need from God is a new mind.

When Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis 3, humankind lost more than our right standing with God. We also lost our mind!

Ever since that time, God has been working to recreate “the mind of Christ” in His people (1 Corinthians 2:16). But the Bible is also clear that you and I have a vital role to play in this renewal process:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God (Romans 12:2).

This teaching from the apostle Paul has several distinct parts:

• A warning … not to be conformed to this world
• A command … to be transformed into the image of Christ
• A process … the renewing of your mind
• A purpose … to discover the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God

The Greek word for “transformed” is the same word from which we get the English word “metamorphosis.” Metamorphosis means a complete change of something’s nature. Paul is saying that instead of being squeezed into the mold of this world’s twisted values, you can become something completely different by the renewing of your mind.

In order to understand the meaning of “renew,” we need to look at the prefix, “re.” This means to “do again” or “go back.” Paul wants us to see the amazing truth that God wants to restore our mind to what it was like before sin entered the world. This renewed mind doesn’t think like the natural fallen mindset of the world. It is rooted in God’s word and cannot be shaken by deceptions of this world.

A renewed mind is able to shake off limitations, doubt, and unbelief — understanding that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13). With this new mindset, you can be used by God to release His will here on earth! This is a key part of how Jesus said to pray (Matthew 6:10).

How It Happens

Of course, you cannot renew your mind in your own strength. You need the Holy Spirit to give you His perspective, and this comes through daily communion with Him.

Studying and meditating on God’s Word is another vital part of renewing your mind. How can you detect Satan’s lies if you don’t take time to find out the truth?

My friend, you will inevitably become like whatever your mind dwells upon. That’s why Proverbs 23:7 says, “As he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Your thinking controls your actions, and your actions determine your outcomes and your destiny.

So in order to renew your mind, you must take authority over your thoughts. This requires a firm decision to maintain your focus and “set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2).

Great things are ahead as you allow God to renew your mind. He will increasingly use you to manifest His Kingdom and His will “on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). What an exciting life!
