King Solomon’s Economy: Unlock Six Wisdom Truths

King Solomon was the richest man who ever lived. By today’s standards, he would make Bill Gates look like a pauper!

But when you look deeper into Solomon’s life, there’s proof that his passion for living was not centered on wealth. He in fact asked for an “understanding heart” so he could “discern between good and evil” (1 Kings 3:7-9).

It’s unlikely that you will ever be the recipient of Solomon’s level of wealth, but you can be a part of his wisdom. Following are six points concerning his counsel on money, all of which can apply to your own household today:

1. If you plan to eat, you better work! “He who tills his land will have plenty of food, but he who follows empty pursuits will have poverty in plenty” (Proverbs 28:19). If you are not able to work, the Lord has still promised to be your provision.
2. You’ll never succeed by sleeping! “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, then your poverty will come as a robber, and your want like an armed man” (Proverbs 24:33-34).
3. Don’t squander your savings. “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up” (Proverbs 21:20 KJV).
4. Make honesty of your financial foundation. “Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, but the one who gathers by labor increases it” (Proverbs 13:11).
5. Wealth is only temporary. “Know well the condition of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds; for riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure all generations” (Proverbs 27:23-24).
6. Give God what belongs to Him. “Honor the Lord from your wealth, and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine” (Proverbs 3:9-10).

How Many Do You Practice?

With an ever-changing economy, it can sometimes seem difficult to adhere to Solomon’s wisdom in every situation. Sometimes you’re in-between jobs and unable to work. Sometimes your body is weary and you need more rest than usual.

But the one truth that should never be ignored is to “honor the Lord from your wealth.” Mind you, this passage does not refer only to the wealthy (as defined by today’s standards); it applies to each of us, regardless of how our income or material worth is defined.
