Abiding with the Lord: The Secret to Successful Spiritual Growth

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries3 Minutes

One of the greatest secrets of spiritual growth is to cultivate a moment-by-moment habit of abiding and dwelling with the Lord. God’s Word promises, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust!’” (Psalm 91:1-2)

This Psalm goes on to share the awesome benefits you can expect when you choose to completely trust in the Lord.

God promises to:

  • Deliver you from Satan’s snares
  • Become your refuge and protection
  • Remove the fear of terror
  • Shield you from harm
  • Send His angels to guard you
  • Honor you
  • Reward you with a long, satisfying life

And that’s just the beginning! When you are apart from Him, you can do nothing. Abiding in Him, you will bear much fruit!

Having an Intimate Relationship with Jesus

If you’re wondering how to have an intimate relationship with Him, look to John 15:4-10 for the following guides on abiding in Him:

  • Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
  • If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up: and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
  • My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

Jesus uses the word “abide” nine times in this passage. Clearly, He is emphasizing how important it is to abide in Him — to have an intimate relationship with Him — but just what does it mean?

As believers and followers of Christ, we are to live in Him. We are to be surrounded by Him. We are to be protected by Him, in unbroken intimacy — forever!
