David Hume had enormous influence in his time. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1711, he became an important philosopher, economist, and writer. One of his primary conclusions was that nothing can be known outside of our personal experience.

It was clear from his writings that he had no experience of anything supernatural. This is a reason why he attacked the whole concept of “miracles.”

In one of his book, he wrote that “a miracle is a violation of the laws of nature.” He felt that “a firm and unalterable experience has established” these natural laws and that, therefore, miracles simply could not happen. While considering himself a believer in God, he felt that “nothing is esteemed a miracle” if it ever happened “in the common course of nature.”

Today, many people have adopted the kind of skepticism encouraged by Hume, believing that miracles are impossible. In fact, some doubt that God exists or, if He does, He does not answer prayer. Others make fun of those who believe in miracles, while others simply are skeptical and filled with doubt.

When Jesus was on earth, there was no doubt that He performed miracles. People traveled all over the region, believing that He could do anything.

What about you? Do you believe that He still performs miracles? Do you believe that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever? Do you believe that nothing is impossible for God? Have you allowed doubt to enter your heart and mind?

The Bible reminds us that God is the same God who created the universe, and that you serve the same Savior who performed mighty miracles while on earth. He is the God of miracles. Commit your “impossible” situations to Him. Believe Him for miracles.
